TEN-MINUTE CHARACTER BACKGROUND

Name: Glamrenlith (in Sindarin, took as Eladrin elvish, it means "echoing dust/ash")

-(bonus)- Catch phrase: "The earth saved me, the earth claimed me."

5 Background and Concept Elements:

-1- He's a survivor of an ancient battle that completely destroyed his city (Cendriane?) when he was very little, he doesn't even remember, but he was eventually blessed with great primal power in a place he had been using as refuge. The place was a fey demesne of some kind of green fey strongly related to the earth or maybe just a place of primal power in the feywild.
There he went in a strange state of hibernation for an unknown amount of time, waking up with his distinctive features (skin the color of earth, bleached blond hair, and even beard, normally absent in elves).
So he is of unknown age, but has the mind of a very young boy, albeit unnaturally calm and serene.

-2- His particular origin gives him a strange personality. He's obviously naive for certain things, but very wise for others. He has a vivid curiosity, but he's fundamentally placid and calm. Probably due to its fey hibernation or due to the shocks he lived, he seems to have an incredible resistance to pain. When he fights, he's cold and expects that others don't feel pain either. He witnessed the helpless nature's cycle out there, and death is seen just like a natural thing. All this animality inside him doesn't stop him from being graceful most of the time, showing that his ultra-civilized heritage is in some way still present inside him.

-3- His view of the world matured with all of his purposeless wanderings. He visited many places and after some time he got more in touch with his adult state and with the current state of the world. His "primal sleep" must have been full of dreams, since he has a very personal (of course nature/animistic-centred) view of the world, so he actually experiences some conflicts when analysing the world. Deities for example, he sees these beings like conquerors who should be driven away in favour of the "ones of this world". He has some xenophobia inside him, that may actually be the cause of his very rare moments of rage when dealing with aberrations and abominations. Nothing strikes him more than aberrant creatures, he really hates them...

-4- Of the few things he remembers of his real childhood, one is her sister. He doesn't remind her by any other name but "sister" and he's sure she survived in some way similar to his. He wandered a lot in the feywild to search for her.

-5- When he decided to venture more into the world, leaving the feywild, he had to deal with people mistaking him for a drow or however being xenophobic. Nonetheless, few women share the same feelings, and he conquered many a heart, although most of the times his childish mind prevented him from actually knowing what was going on. Being mentally young, and being an Eladrin at it, he's a little slow-minded when it comes to sexuality, and he's accustomed to very high standards of beauty, so all his admirers have a hard time with him. He falls only for very direct expressions of interest and only when they come out from very beautiful beings. He has been in love with a dryad, back in the feywild days, and he wonders why other women just don't change their appearance like dryads do, if they're not beautiful enough... He has this kind of feeling for many things. He assumes fey qualities such as teleportation as standard, and not being a very good thinker, he's not very interested in understanding differences. He just watches, cataloguing the experiences and wonder.

Goals/Secrets (merged):

-1- He would like to find his lost sister and eventually other survivors. He would also like to know what happened, and who to blame for it. Revenge is a goal that is slowly but constantly acquiring strength in his mind.

-2- He searches for a greater understanding of his nature, primal forces and their role in the world. When it comes to it, he becomes more of a philosopher than a warrior.

-3- It would be nice to discover that Glamrenlith is actually thousands of years old and that his sister underwent a similar process but having more time to develop or withstanding different processes, she maybe became something twisted, like a Winter Witch, or maybe ascending directly to the court of Sehanine or Corellon in Arvandor, as an exarch. More twisted even, she could have been corrupted by the forces that destroyed the realm and now be some kind of "aberrant queen" (like the Queen of Blades in the Stracraft franchise). In all cases, she could be a great nemesis, with the twist of being the most loved one by Glamrenlith , making him vulnerable, but maybe also making HER vulnerable.

People tied to Glamrenlith:

-1- The dryad whom he loved for many years. The circumstances of their separation are not clear. Fey matters...

-2- Some gnomes. In the zone where he got his power, there were gnomes. He's kind of known to some of them and the relationship is mutually good.

-3- A friendly drow maybe, who took him for some distant cousin. He never grew up under drow menace, and he doesn't share the hate for them. He even sometimes see their brutality with indifference or curiosity. Plus, he doesn't see much visual difference.

-4- There could be an enemy on the divine side. A paladin or a cleric of some deity that may perceive him as some kind of undead (and will it be so far from the turth?..).

Memories

-1- Strange dreams, like a second life lived during his "primal sleep" inside a crystal cave filled with roots and... A strange primal place. He has these primal memories so vivid that he actually experiences some "imaginary friend" types of thing, that he lives out like a small child.

-2- His old city, that he never managed to find again. When he tries to remember, he looses it and starts crying, he doesn't want to remember, or he can't. There might be some magical/psionic permanent psychic shock inside his mind and soul. He only remembers small details when he witnesses related things. All that he remembers clearly is this "sister", who ran away with him but in some way ended up lost.
He remembers few facial features of her, he says her eyes were unique, whatever that means.

-3- He actually knows a lot of Feywild geography. Having wandered there for years.
It took far more than 10 minutes!

I'll explain the "10 minutes background" a bit later, also to give credit to the inventor.

This character is the same appearing in "Fey-earth Sleep", which is a flash-intro of the character.

UPDATE: So this 10 minutes background is something I borrowed from a good guy named The_Stray, in the D&D official forums. His thread, where he explains this simple method of sketching a character's background, has reached more than 40 pages worth of posted characters! Here it is, if you're interested: [link]
